We are building a software application in .Net C# to install on Linux. We need the ability for our own software to update itself when a new version is available. We dont need this to be in .Net we are happy to accept other options i.e. Python. But over an above all we dont want this to be a hack where by we hard code admin pw or have the user prompt to install. It needs to be silent update like chrome or MS teams will update.
How we have achieved this in windows is to have 2 apps where 1 can update the other using the local system account (how AV updates usually work). This is done by installing the "Updater" app, which then poles an external API for a new version, when a new version is detected then the updater will download the "Main App" and then install it over the top using the Local System Account. What we need to know is the best way to achieve this on the Linux platform(s).
The Main App only needs to be a "Hello World" application to prove it runs what we need to nail here is the update process and ensure it is enterprise grade. We do however need to know that this will work on modern versions of Linux OS and need to know you have the capability of testing this across different versions (again so a Linux software developer in general)
